"Outdoor learning experiences are often remembered for a lifetime. Integrating learning and outdoor experiences, whether through play in the immediate grounds or adventures further afield, provides relevance and depth to the curriculum in ways that are difficult to achieve indoors. Learning outdoors can be enjoyable, creative, challenging and adventurous and helps children and young people learn by experience and grow as confident and responsible citizens who value and appreciate the spectacular landscapes, natural heritage and culture of Scotland."

Fenton Barns Nursery provides a unique, high quality early learning and childcare facility on a purpose-built premises within East Lothian.  The emphasis is firmly on learning through child-led play in the outdoors, healthy living and locally sourced, homemade meals.

We welcome children from 3 months - 5 years and provide a friendly and nurturing learning environment where children learn through play and quality led experiences. Utilising the extensive countryside that is on our doorstep as well as building strong family and community links is at the heart of our practice here at Fenton Barns Nursery.
Our children are split over four rooms - The Wrens, The Robins, The Puffins and The Owls depending on their age and stage of development. Each room has an indoor and outdoor play area which extends to two larger gardens, one being set in our very own woodland area, enhanced with an abundance of age appropriate natural learning materials. Our friendly team of highly qualified early years professionals will be happy to meet with you to discuss how they plan daily and weekly learning experiences for their children alongside the Curriculum for Excellence and Pre-birth to Three and Realising the Ambition documentation.

We follow this in our Owls Room. Curriculum for Excellence is the national curriculum for Scottish schools for learners from the ages 3-15. There are eight curriculum areas.
Literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing are recognised as being particularly important – these areas are seen as being the ‘responsibility of all’ staff.

The Care Inspectorate regulates and inspects care services in Scotland to make sure that they meet the right standards. We also jointly inspect with other regulators to check how well different organisations in local areas work to support adults and children.

We currently use Learning Journals to update you on your child's development and upload  observations for you to look at from the comfort of your own home.

Childsmile – improving the oral health of children in Scotland. Childsmile is reducing inequalities in oral health and ensuring access to dental services for every child across the country.
They’re hand made from natural rubber and have a great grip.  We recommend going up a size from shoes to allow for growth and nice welly socks.
